Best Computers for Graphic Design
Fast, reliable Macs and PCs for designers who work in Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, and modern digital workflows — built and supported by DC Computers in San Diego.
Why Graphic Designers Need the Right Workstation
Modern graphic design isn’t just Photoshop anymore. Designers juggle Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, Figma, Canva, and sometimes motion tools like After Effects — often with big assets, multiple fonts, and lots of browser tabs. If the computer lags, creativity stalls.
At DC Computers, we build and configure systems (Mac or PC) that keep your tools responsive: fast launches, smooth panning and zooming, high-res monitor support, and storage that won’t choke on big client folders. Whether you’re designing brands, packaging, web UI, social media campaigns, or print layouts, we can match the hardware to your real workflow.
Recommended Hardware for Graphic Design
CPU (Processor)
- Most design apps are not super heavy on multi-core, so a fast, modern CPU with strong single-core performance is ideal.
- This keeps Photoshop brushes snappy, Illustrator zooming smooth, and background exports fast.
- We can spec Intel, AMD, or Apple Silicon depending on your preference and software stack.
Memory (RAM)
-
16GB is the minimum for today’s Creative Cloud workflows.
-
32GB is the sweet spot for designers who have Photoshop, Illustrator, Chrome, and cloud storage running at the same time.
- Go higher if you also do light video, motion design, or big photo retouching.
Storage
- Always start with a fast NVMe SSD — design apps read/write lots of small files, fonts, previews, and temp data.
- 1TB is a great baseline so you don’t run out when clients send giant asset folders.
- We can add a second SSD for “Active Client Work” plus local backup or connect to NAS/cloud.
Graphics (GPU) & Displays
- Most 2D design tools don’t need a high-end GPU, but a modern GPU helps with smooth UI and multi-monitor setups.
- If you’re doing 3D mockups, light motion, or using GPU-accelerated features, we’ll size the GPU appropriately.
- We can also set up dual 4K displays or a single color-accurate panel for print and brand work.
Optimized for Popular Design Software
We can tailor a Mac or PC for:
-
Adobe Photoshop – retouching, web graphics, social media assets
-
Adobe Illustrator – logos, vector work, packaging, branding
-
Adobe InDesign – brochures, catalogs, layout-heavy documents
-
Figma, XD, Sketch – UI/UX design and web prototypes
-
Canva / Web-based tools – marketing teams, social content creators
-
Lightroom – for designers who also handle photography
Tell us what you use most and we’ll tune the RAM, storage, and display setup so you can stay in flow.

Graphic Design Computer FAQ
Do I need a Mac or PC for graphic design?
Both work. If your studio or clients are Mac-based, we can set up a refurbished Mac or MacBook. If you want more upgradability and value, we can build a Windows workstation. We support both in-store.
Is 16GB RAM enough for Adobe Creative Cloud?
16GB is the current minimum. If you run Photoshop, Illustrator, and a browser with a bunch of tabs, 32GB will feel noticeably better — especially on bigger files.
Can you set up dual monitors for design?
Yes. We can configure dual or ultra-wide displays, plus color-accurate options for print designers.
Do you have refurbished Macs for designers?
We often have refurbished MacBooks, iMacs, and Mac Studios in-store — tested, cleaned, and backed by DC Computers. Great option for designers on a budget.
